A modern classic listed among the San Francisco Chronicle's 100 Best Novels of the 20th Century West!
ANGEL FIRE is a haunting tale of two brothers' separate odysseys of self-discovery. Twenty-four years after war correspondent Daniel McLeod is killed in a Viet Cong ambush, his only brother Cassidy is drawn by a mysterious caller to their Wyoming hometown, where he must confront a lifetime of his own ghosts. Their entangled stories are about equilibrium, the delicate balance between memory and the unknown, dislocation and homecoming ... loss and restoration.
Set against the deceptive simplicity of a small town on the high plains, ANGEL FIRE is a story of timeless rhythms. It resonates with the familiarity of tales told for millennia, but they appear anew here, as fresh as a Wyoming summer breeze.
USA TODAY
"[Franscell's] themes involve a fresh approach to our rural roots as a font for the elusive American spirit."
LIBRARY JOURNAL
"A beautiful novel of family love and loyalty set in Wyoming, Angel Fire focuses on Cassidy McLeod, writer and journalist from a long line of newspapermen, whose troubled life is finally reconciled through tragedy and loss. Cassidy's brother Daniel, reported killed in Vietnam while on assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle, is rescued and returned to home and family in 1995, haunted by ghosts of his life in Vietnam during the past 20 years. Guilt and love compel Cassidy to suspend his own life in San Francisco to care for his brother. The horror of war and its impact on those who have experienced it are vividly presented, tempered by Cassidy's memories of childhood and his adulation for an older brother and by Franscell's evocation of small-town life during the 1950s. Reminiscent of Robert Olin Butler, Franscell has a wonderful command of the English language and a writing style that cannot fail to capture the reader's imagination. Recommended."
DENVER POST
Tender prose ... a heart-wrenching story of love and loss and familial connections ... Using richly descriptive, flowing prose and artful plotting, Franscell has woven together the quite impact of childhood in a small town and the complexities of adulthood. In the challenges of Daniel and Cassidy McLeod, we see our our problems and looming self-doubt. In their triumphs, we envision hopes all our own."
MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW
"Angel Fire documents [Franscell] as an author with an immense ability for language and for storytelling. Highly recommended."
PUSHCART PRIZE-WINNER MELISSA PRITCHARD
"Dramatic, impressively crafted...an important novel of haunting and mythic proportions."
SAN BERNARDINO (CALIF.) SUN
"Angel Fire is a coming-of-age story without easy answers or pat solutions to life's explained — and more often unexplained — circumstances. ... It may be simply in its approach, but it is also complex — as all stories about the human condition should be. While Franscell easily and wonderfully paints the idyllic small-town picture, he also delves into the human psyche, a darker and more intimidating proposition."
BOULDER (COLO.) DAILY CAMERA
"Like Ray Bradbury's 'Dandelion Wine,' though in a much harder and less sentimental vein, 'Angel Fire' has a dreamy, intoxicating quality, full of wistful nostalgia and melancholy ... Franscell's Wyoming is as close to the real Wyoming as I've ever read. There's nothing like a native's-eye view to get an accurate picture of that enigmatic place."
AUTHOR WARREN ADLER ("WAR OF THE ROSES," "RANDOM HEARTS")
"Ron Franscell's achievement is to provide us with deep insights and understanding of the human condition rarely seen in contemporary novels."

Angel Fire edition by Ron Franscell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
As soon as I started reading, the simple beauty of the writing caught my attention. The unfolding description of how Cassidy at the centre of the story has had his whole life change by the loss of his brother is so real and carries you along. I won't spoil the novel, but it would have been so easy for the author to wrap up the story in neat convenient packages - instead he takes the reader on a criss cross journey through the lives of this family damaged by incidents in Vitenam, and never takes the easy way out. The descriptions of Vietnam are harrowing, and only serve to drive the contrast with the calmness and quitness of a small American town especially where he recaptures the simple and long days of childhood.
The characters in this book are so well drawn, believeable and 3 dimensional that they feel real, hence like other reviewers being moved to tears by some of the turns in the novel.
A real gem - I wish I hadn't read it so I could enjoy it all over again!
Angel Fire
If are lonesome for home read this book. If you want to know the meaning of life read this book. The stories with in the stories are an exceptionally well weaved piece of art. Relating to the characters and their journeys creates a valuable look at your own journey. Each flash back became a special surprise for me. I Hope this becomes a classic for my grand children to read.
I first heard of "Angel Fire" when, by chance, Ron Franscell and I were in the same chat room, and he mentioned his first novel would be coming out in June. I read the first chapter on the web site Laughing Owl Publishing set up for the book, and I was hooked.
"Angel Fire" is a compelling story on so many levels. It is the story of the individual, nearing middle age, who finally comes face to face with the ghosts of his own life. It is the story of a family broken by tragedy and healed by love. And, ultimately, it is the story of America, still trying to find its way home decades after Vietnam.
In the story of Cassidy McLeod and his relationship -- past and current -- with his brother David, Mr. Franscell has touched the heart of the individual and the soul of a nation. He masterfully weaves childhood fear, trusting innocence, middle-aged skepticism, and stubborn optimism in a tale as current as today's headline and as ageless as the Odyssey.
This book deserves to be a Number 1 Bestseller.
Wow! Angel Fire was a powerful story and one that I wasn't expecting. I love Ron Franscell's other books and was excited to read this one. The story line started out a little slow, but soon became a page turner that I couldn't put down. I've only read 3 other books that made me cry at the end and this one gets added to the list.
I'm reading Ron Franscell's "Angel Fire" for the second time in seven months. I'm finding it every bit as engaging as I did before. I'm an urban-suburban guy whose sense of small-town life comes mainly from novels. Even more than Willa Cather, Franscell teaches me that small places offer huge potential for drama. The tale concerns two brothers, Daniel and Cassidy McLeod, growing up motherless in West Canaan, Wyomong, with loose adult guidance from their newspaperman father, Archie, and a housekeeper, Oneida Overstreet.
The bond between the brothers is powerful. The older brother, Daniel, covering the Vietnam War for a newspaper, disappears after witnessing an atrocity at the hands of U.S. troops. He is presumed to be dead. Without Daniel, Cassidy begins to drift, losing his focus and falling short of his potential. Daniel reappears in the mid-1990s, a wreck of a human being who has lost his sense of self. Cassidy, a writer based in San Francisco who is now 46, returns to West Canaan, where he rededicates his life to rescuing Daniel from the mists of madness. To say here how that quest turns out would be to give away too much of the plot. But it is appropriate to say that Cassidy reconnects with his roots, both personal and geographical, and finds in them a path toward redemption. And in the person of Tia Lazarus, he finds love.
This brief summary does not begin to do justice to Franscell's narrative powers, which are, of course, what keeps me reading. He paints characters and settings with words, in ways that are never tedious or boring. His plotting is flawless, his dialogue original and, at times, heart-breaking. I'm a novelist myself. Vindicator. But I come away from Franscell's writing with a sense of wistful envy. I have not yet read his other books, but I intend to do so because I have much more to learn from him.
Much popular fiction has a short shelf life. Not "Angel Fire." Fifty years from now it will still be a great read. As for me, I'm looking forward to reading it a third time. Every time I go through it, I learn something new about writing -- and life.
